What Is IV Sedation? A Deeply Relaxing Dental Experience

IV sedation uses medication delivered through a small IV to help you enter a state of deep "twilight sleep". You’ll be able to respond, but most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure — making treatment calm, comfortable, and stress-free.

IV Sedation Is Ideal For:

Severe Dental Anxiety: Perfect for patients who avoid care due to fear.

Complex Procedures: Great for dental implants, full-mouth extractions, or bone grafting.

Strong Gag Reflex: Helps patients who struggle during dental work.

Difficult Numbing: A solution for those who don’t respond well to local anesthesia.

With Dr. Rafik Dib’s expertise, IV sedation transforms dental treatment into a relaxed, worry-free experience.

AVA FAQs

What is IV moderate sedation?

It’s a type of sedation where you’ll be deeply relaxed state and may not remember much afterward. Most patients describe it as “dozing off.”

How will I feel after the procedure?

You may feel groggy for a few hours, similar to waking from a nap. Most patients recover quickly and feel normal by the next day.

Is sedation only for big surgeries?

Not at all. Sedation can be used for many types of procedures, big or small, especially if you feel anxious.

Do I need to fast before IV sedation?

Yes. Usually, you’ll be asked not to eat or drink 8 hours before your surgery to ensure your safety. We’ll give you specific instructions ahead of time.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes. IV sedation is very safe when provided by a trained specialist. We monitor your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen throughout the procedure to keep you safe.

Can I drive myself home afterward?

No. You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a short time afterward, since the sedative can take a few hours to wear off.

Will I feel pain during treatment?

No. With sedation and local anesthesia, you’ll be completely comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
